Description

The Fuel Cell Mechanical Design Engineer provides technical support to the fuel cell product engineering team for designing and maintaining fuel cell systems in a safe and environmentally responsible manner. This position is responsible for designing, engineering, and manufacturing projects in accordance with code, regulatory and company standards.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Designing and analyzing solid oxide fuel cell stack components

  • Designing and analyzing high-temperature balance of plant components for fuel cell systems

  • Working across multiple crafts to 3D model and document all components of fuel cell systems

  • Monitoring and evaluating equipment and fuel cell system performance

  • Troubleshooting equipment problems and implementing solutions

  • Reviewing equipment performance to ensure suitability and recommend improvements

  • Managing numerous activities and backlog work items

  • Developing all mechanical design work for minor to intermediate size projects

  • Developing cost estimates and business justification for improvement projects as well as their own recommendations

  • Specifying, procuring and installing fuel cell system components

  • Working with procurement and manufacturing teams to improve designs

  • Reviewing proposed mechanical designs, by others, to ensure adequacy and code/company standard compliance

  • Leading/participating in failure analysis of equipment

  • Ensuring repairs and changes are in accordance with management of change processes

  • Ensuring their continuous professional development as well as assisting with developing other engineers

Required Qualifications

  • Associate’s degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering or similar

  • 3 or more years of professional experience in designing mechanical systems

  • Exceptional skill with 3D modeling, assemblies, and drawings in SolidWorks or similar

  • Ability to manage many engineering revisions

  • Knowledge of high-volume manufacturing techniques including laser cutting, milling, turning, and sheet metal fabrication

Preferred Qualifications

  • 7 or more years of experience in engineering design

  • 3 or more years of experience in a role fabricating metal components

  • Bachelor’s degree or certified skills in engineering design

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or similar 3D modeling software for wiring harnesses

  • Experience with fuel cells, electrolyzers, or other electro-chemical energy systems

  • Desired attributes include self-motivation, problem-solving, ability to work autonomously, and strong interpersonal skills

  • Experience in computational fluid dynamics and finite element analyses

  • Highly motivated self-starter looking to build a new industry
