The Distributed Control Systems (DCS) Specialist brings specialist skills to lead key activities such as technical & safety integrity of the field engineering, field procurement, interfaces with Quality Assurance and facilitates start-up activities. An individual at this level is expected to contribute extensively to a single discipline and to multi-disciplinary projects within the area of specialization with a high degree of independence. The individual is also expected to develop a broad understanding of other relevant disciplines.
Responsibilities May Include
Maintaining hardware and software for distributed control systems and safety instrumented systems
Configuring distributed control systems and safety instrumented systems to achieve automation objectives
Providing system management for distributed control systems and safety instrumented systems
Monitoring and maintaining performance of regulatory and advanced controls
Assisting control engineers in development, implementation, and maintenance of new advanced control strategies
Assisting project group with instrumentation and control engineering activities on capital projects
Assisting in developing and maintaining an effective maintenance program for control systems
Assisting with design, construction support/supervision and startup assistance for instrumentation and control systems on capital projects
Supervising and coordinating contractors performing work on control and safety systems
Acting as technical resource on instrumentation and control for Instrument Craftsmen and other groups
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
High School diploma or GED
3 or more years of experience maintaining hardware and software for distributed control systems
1 or more years of experience in a refinery, petrochemical and/or industrial plant environment
Associates degree in Engineering Technology, Instrumentation, I/E, or Electronics
Knowledge of process controls and control systems
Knowledge of safety instrumented systems
Knowledge of instrumentation for flow, level, pressure, temperature, and analytical measurement
Experience with Emerson DeltaV controls systems
Experience with Emerson Provox Control System
Ability to work effectively as a member of the multi-discipline technical team supporting electrical, instrumentation, and process control systems
Understands and uses functional expertise to contribute to the success of the business
Establishes priorities and develops critical tasks
Accepts ownership, is accountable, and delivers on commitments

The Billings Refinery is located in Billings, Montana. Its facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of Canadian heavy, high-sulfur crude oil delivered by pipeline, and domestic crude oil delivered by truck. With the startup of a new vacuum distillation unit in 2017, the refinery has 100 percent heavy crude processing capability. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels and petroleum coke. Finished petroleum products are distributed by pipeline, rail car and truck. Pipelines transport most of the refined products to markets in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Utah, Colorado and Washington.
