The Instrument Technician (Craftsman), Borger Refinery is expected to configure and maintain various types of pneumatic and electronic instrumentation. Starting rate of pay for an Instrument Technician (Craftsman) is currently $36.11/hour with the top progression within the Instrument classification making $49.24/hour.
This position requires successful completion of aptitude, behavioral and skills testing and an on-site interview. Candidates who receive an offer of employment will then be required to successfully complete a pre-employment due diligence process that consists of, but not limited to, a background check, medical, hearing, respiratory and vision exams, and agility testing.

Responsibilities May Include:
Troubleshooting, removing, repairing, and re-installing various types of control loops, controllers, transmitters, automated valves and switches
Troubleshooting and repairing instrumentation controlled by distributed control systems (DCS) and programmable logic controllers (PLC)
Remove, repair, re-install various types of automated valves, positioners, and actuators
Troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining online process analyzers and sample systems, including gas chromatographs, Continuous Emission Monitoring Systems (CEMS), oxygen, conductivity, PH, and tail gas analyzers
Troubleshooting and repairing rotating equipment vibration and temperature monitoring systems
Utilizing test equipment, such as multi-meters, temperature and pressure calibrators, and signal generators
Understanding instrumentation principles related to temperature, pressure, level, and flow measurement
Understanding basic process control principles, including loop tuning
Reading and interpreting loop drawings, P&IDs, wiring, schematics, etc.
Configuring, installing, loop checking, and commissioning new instrumentation
Installing instrument tubing and tubing fittings
Operating motorized and manual equipment
Performing work activities that include pulling, lifting, twisting, working in confined spaces and on elevated platforms requiring fall protection
Entering and retrieving computer data
Using fire equipment when necessary along with many other general maintenance activities
Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Must have and maintain a valid driver's license
Willingness to comply with the following items, with or without reasonable accommodation:
Work at least an 8-hour shift and up to a 12-hour shift, which includes some weekends, holidays, and nights
Available for on-call responsibilities
Work overtime
Work in enclosed/confined spaces, such as tanks and silos
Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
Work around chemicals, including acids and bases
Work outside in harsh weather conditions
Climb up to 250 feet in height
Lift up to 50 pounds
Perform firefighting duties
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear, and eye protection)
Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and high temperature
Able to read at a level to understand technical procedures, documents, and materials
Learn computer software associated with process operations
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical certification for Instrumentation or Electronics (or higher) or a minimum of 2 years of related equivalent work experience
Associates Degree in Electronics or Instrumentation
2 or more years of experience as an Instrument Technician (Craftsman)
2 or more years of recent continuous full-time work experience
4 or more years of Military experience working with instrumentation or electronics
3 or more years of direct experience working in a refinery and/or chemical industry
Experience with SAP’s Maintenance Module or other ERP Maintenance modules
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Strong oral/written communication skills and the ability to interact and work in a team environment
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Accepts ownership, is accountable, and delivers on commitments
The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
