Phillips 66 Laboratory Technician, Borger Refinery in Borger, Texas

The Laboratory Technician, Borger Refinery is expected to perform various chemical analyses in a quality control laboratory. The starting rate of pay ranges, based on skills and experience, from $36.11 - $38.73/hour.
This position requires successful completion of aptitude and behavioral testing, and an on-site interview. Candidates who receive an offer of employment will then be required to successfully complete a pre-employment due diligence process that consists of, but not limited to, a background check, medical, hearing, respiratory and vision exams and agility testing.
Responsibilities May Include:
Climbing stairs on storage tanks, bending, kneeling, squatting, and some heavy lifting
Maintaining a safe work environment, sample and handle chemical materials, and performing maintenance on laboratory equipment
Working directly with plant engineers, operations and maintenance personnel and other lab personnel in a team environment
Entering and retrieving computer data
Using fire equipment when necessary, along with many other general maintenance activities
Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the United States without restrictions
Currently hold (and able to maintain) a valid driver's license
Associate’s degree or higher in Chemistry/Chemical Technology or another related Science discipline
2 or more years of experience as a Laboratory Technician
2 or more years of direct experience working in a refinery and/or chemical industry
Willingness to perform/comply with the following, with or without reasonable accommodation:
Work a 12-hour rotating shift, which includes some weekends, holidays and nights
Work overtime
Assume on-call responsibilities
Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos
Work near large, hot, high-speed machines
Climb up to 250 feet in height
Lift a minimum of 50 pounds
Work with chemicals, including acids, bases and solvents
Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)
Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)
Perform firefighting duties
Work outside in harsh weather conditions
Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and high temperatures
Able to evacuate in a safe and timely manner in the event of an emergency
Able to read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits, instruction manuals
Able to learn computer software associated with process operations
Operate standard petroleum laboratory testing instrumentation and test equipment
Follow both Standard Laboratory Procedures (SLPs) and American Society for Testing Materials (ASTM) procedures
Perform minor instrument maintenance
Preferred Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or Chemical Engineering (other Physical Science disciplines considered)
3 to 5 years of experience as a Laboratory Technician or Chemist
3 to 5 years of direct experience working in a refinery and/or chemical industry
Knowledge of CFR Engines and willingness to perform minor maintenance
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Strong oral / written communication skills
Ability to work in a team environment
Ability to work self-directed
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills
Accepts ownership, is accountable, and delivers on commitments
The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
