A Process Unit Engineer uses technical expertise to achieve operational and project objectives by working to design, implement, control and optimize new and existing processes that are used in Phillips 66 refineries. By partnering with internal and external stakeholders the Process Engineer collaborates to build technically sound strategies around business improvement opportunities, safety enhancements and sustainability while reducing cost and maximizing profitability.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Troubleshooting and optimizing process operations and equipment

  • Communicating and correcting process quality problems

  • Developing, monitoring and evaluating unit performance metrics and maintaining effective monitoring reports

  • Utilizing Unit Monitoring Tools to optimize unit operations, as applicable

  • Providing technical assistance for operating procedures and catalyst management

  • Participating in Process Safety Management (PSM) activities such as MOC, PHA's and LOPA

  • Identifying and developing process improvement ideas and working to ensure ideas are incorporated into expense and capital plans

  • Lead scoping and FEL- 0/1 development phases of expense / capital projects requiring process design work.

  • Providing technical support for turnarounds and unit shutdown / startups on shift schedule

  • Monitoring/evaluating unit key performance metrics and maintaining effective monitoring reports, yields and trends

  • Supporting unit turnarounds including work list identification/justification and equipment inspection

Position Requirements


  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Chemical Engineering

  • Currently hold a valid driver’s license

  • Experience in refining, petrochemical or related industry

  • Experience working as a Process Engineer

  • Willing to travel (<10% expected) for training, networking, or support for other P66 locations


  • 4 or more years of experience in refining

  • 4 or more years of experience working as a Process Engineer

  • Working knowledge of process simulation programs such as Hysys, Proll or AspenPlus

The Borger Refinery is located in Borger, Texas, in the Texas Panhandle, approximately 50 miles north of Amarillo, Texas. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units, as well as an NGL fractionation facility. The refinery processes primarily medium sour crude oil produced locally, and heavy sour crude oil produced in Canada, all of which are delivered by pipeline. Borger produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petroleum coke, NGLs and solvents. Refined products are distributed to customers via pipelines from the refinery to West Texas, New Mexico, Colorado and the Midcontinent region.
