The Process Control Team Lead - Ferndale Refinery is responsible for the refinery's control systems including DCS, APC and other stand-alone controls to ensure that safety, regulatory, production, and optimization objectives are met. This includes life cycle management of these systems as well as support of regulatory and advance control strategies.

This position provides supervisory direction for a team of controls engineers, specialists, as well as manages occasional contractor resources. Other responsibilities include supporting process information applications and instrument reliability.

Responsibilities may include :

  • Participating and promoting all aspects of the refinery safety program. Demonstrating leadership to the workplace safety and health of employees and contractors through personal engagement and sound decisions
  • Communicating effectively with operations, maintenance, process and project engineering, vendors, contractors, etc. to address problems, coordinate work being performed, and discuss ideas
  • Driving support for DCS, PLC interfaces, and other stand-alone control systems / operator interfaces including point configuration, loop tuning, graphics design, and system maintenance
  • Driving support for advanced controls including evaluation and development of APC applications, calculation of inferred properties, model testing, and system maintenance
  • Driving life cycle management for control systems including ensuring availability of critical spares, implementing system software upgrades, and planning for future hardware design / migrations to maintain reliability and support
  • Driving support for alarm management and other interface applications including configuration and maintenance
  • Drives support for system networking and security including design and maintenance of domains, network equipment, and software
  • Leading the identification and evaluation of controls and instrument reliability issues and then implements solutions or recommends paths forward
  • Developing, implementing, and optimizing control strategies to increase process safety, operability, and profitability
  • Providing support during process startups, shutdowns, and upsets
  • Working closely with project engineering to design, implement, and startup projects involving control systems
  • Driving effective documentation of controls, alarms, calculations, training, interfaces, configuration, policies, etc. while ensuring documentation is kept current and changes managed
  • Driving control system compliance with best practices, corporate standards, process safety management, and security requirements
  • Participating in or leading refinery incident investigation teams for root cause analysis and corrective actions
  • Training and developing operators, technicians, and engineers on control systems operation and maintenance
  • Driving and / or participating in the MOC process including initiation, evaluations, completing assigned work, and startup safety reviews
  • Providing reporting and optimization of performance metrics for control systems
  • Participating as a member of the company's knowledge share network for control systems
  • Coordinating external contractor services as needed
  • Supporting by backfilling the responsibilities of other process control engineers as needed
  • Setting expectations and provides effective direction and development for the following reports: Control System Engineers, Control Specialists and Technicians, GIS Historian Administrator (Indirect report)


Basic/Required :

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering
  • 1 or more years of experience in a manufacturing/operating plant environment
  • Knowledge of DCS and other control systems regarding use, design, installation, and configuration
  • Must have a valid driver's license
  • Ability and willingness to perform/comply, with or without a reasonable accommodation, with the following:
  • Obtain a TWIC card or currently hold one

  • Climb, stand, crawl in confined space entry

  • Firefight and maneuver through process areas containing pumps, towers, compressors, piping systems, etc.

  • Wear refinery-required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Available for on-call support 24/7/365

  • Work outside in all weather conditions including cold and heat

Preferred :

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical or Electrical Engineering
  • Direct experience as a process or controls engineer supporting control systems in a refinery or chemical manufacturing environment
  • Direct experience with configuration of Honeywell Experion DCS
  • Direct experience with configuration of Aspentech DMCplus advance process controls
  • Direct experience with field instrumentation
  • Knowledge of control system maintenance practices
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively set direction and lead
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement practical solutions and projects
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong people interaction skills
  • Strong problem-solving skills

The Ferndale Refinery is located in Ferndale, WA which is located on Puget Sound, about 20 miles south of the U.S. - Canada border. The refinery processes about 105,000 barrels per day of oil and is a high conversion facility allowing optimized utilization of feedstock. The refinery includes Clean Gasoline and Ultra-Low Sulfur Diesel units providing emissions friendly products to meet today's stringent standards. Operations are run 24 hours per day, seven days per week.
