The Office of the Chief Economist (OoCE) supports the Executive Leadership Team (ELT) in a corporate staff role. The Chief Economist develops and articulates the long-term view of global economic and market factors driving Company performance. The OoCE provides corporate glue to the various Phillips 66 functions and business units with strategic alignment and the executive’s vision in the context of both the global marketplace and their specific business realities.

As a Senior Economist, you will work closely with the Chief Economist in conducting fundamental analysis, supporting various ELT functions and business initiatives/ deep dives, and providing thought leadership. You will provide mentorship and coaching to junior Energy Economists on the team. Success in this role will reply upon being an energetic self-starter, multi-tasker, independent thinker, who has the ability to drill down to detailed issues, draw conclusions, and ultimately be able to communicate and present findings in a concise and focused way. This is a highly visible position with various Business Units, Corporate Strategy, Value Chain Optimization, and Investor Relations teams.

Responsibilities May Include

  • Macroeconomic Analysis

  • Demand drivers- utilize a vast set of economic statistics to forecast crude, products, and petrochemicals demand

  • Statistical Analysis- conduct comprehensive statistical calculations of economic data, market pricing and various other industry data sets that help identify market trends that ultimately feed supply/demand models

  • Geopolitical- account for various global geopolitical events and their resulting ramifications on market fundamentals

  • Supply/Demand Modeling

  • Crude/NGLs- Analyze upstream and midstream markets and develop medium to long-term U.S. and global production, imports/exports, and transportation costs outlooks

  • Products- develop comprehensive analysis around U.S. and global downstream light and heavy refined product markets by integrating macroeconomic trends, yield shifts, import/export flows, and changes in refined capacity

  • Petrochemicals- develop olefins and polyolefins capacities, supply, demand, and chain margin outlooks

  • Long Range Plan and Annual Budget

  • Acts as key contributor to the rolling 10-year annual long-term strategic price deck and annual budget of crude and product price database that ultimately supports capital decision marking, go-to-market strategies, and asset optimization

  • Value Chain and Corporate Strategy

  • Provides an informed market view on various market fundamentals and help identify/communicate changes in the energy landscape that shapes forward strategic initiatives

  • Investor Relations and Executive Support

  • Provides guidance on market-related questions for investors and earnings call preparation

  • Supplies market data used in investor presentations and industry conferences

  • Contribute to various ad-hoc studies and deep dives on topics such as EV and hydrogen adoption, regulatory changes/implications, GDP and various macroeconomic metrics, and industry performance

Position Requirements


  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree

  • 2 or more years of experience in market analytics

  • 5 or more years of experience in the energy industry


  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Economics, or Finance; Advanced Degree

  • Operational or Commercial experience

  • Ability to allocate responsibilities and coordinate multiple work streams to meet demanding deadlines

  • Working Knowledge of Phillips 66 businesses and key value drivers

  • Collaborates effectively in a team-oriented environment

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills

  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills

  • Adaptable and flexible to fluctuating work hours
