Description

Under the general technical guidance of the designated Staff Chemist, the Gas Chromatography (GC) Laboratory Technician - Bayway Refinery is responsible for a broad range of Analysis, Instrumentation, and Method Development on all the GC and related analyzers (e.g., Agilent 5890, 6890, and 7890 GC’s, sulfur analyzers).

Responsibilities May Include

  • Runs routine and non-routine samples as per refinery need.

  • Ensures GC performance by looking at daily sample runs for baseline, peak shapes, retention time, etc. and weekly reference standards runs.

  • Maintains inventory of necessary parts as approved by the chemist.

  • Performs scheduled basic preventive maintenance (cleaning filters, changing septum, GC gas management, switching out columns, changing valves and fittings, leak checks, etc.).

  • Works closely with chemist to diagnose, troubleshoot, and makes necessary hardware repairs including column installation/conditioning, replacing injection valves, inlet liner changes, detector cleanings, etc. as well as calibrates instrument and updates method in software whenever needed and maintains good records of all the maintenance performed.

  • Responsible for assuring methods perform within historical precision limits, as guided by the chemist.

  • Ensures compliance to ASTM standards on GC’s that are configured as per ASTM methods.

  • Team player, comfortable with peers and management, and ability to train technicians on GC procedures as needed.

Position Requirements

Basic/Required:

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science or Engineering

  • Strong fundamentals of analytical chemistry

  • 5 or more years of GC analytical experience in analyzing gas and liquid hydrocarbon samples

  • Demonstrated knowledge with configuring/troubleshooting GC’s, including columns installation, detectors, injectors, valves replacement, etc.

  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team

  • Follow safety procedures

  • Willing and able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC). Information can be found at https://www.tsa.gov/for-industry/twic

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree in Science or Engineering

  • 5 or more years in relevant progressive experience in Petroleum lab working with 5890, 6890, and 7890 GC’s as well as skilled in ChromPerfect, and Chemstation software

  • Refinery product characterization expertise with special focus on trace level analysis

  • Familiarity with out-of-specification (OOS) and out-of-trend investigations

  • Self-motivated and decisive

  • Customer-service oriented

  • Ability to communicate effectively

The Bayway Refinery is located on the New York Harbor in Linden, New Jersey. Bayway's facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, solvent deasphalting, hydrodesulfurization and alkylation units. The complex also includes a polypropylene plant with the capacity to produce up to 775 million pounds per year. The refinery processes mainly light and medium, low-sulfur crude oil. Foreign crude oil is supplied to the refinery by tanker, and domestic crude oil is supplied through a combination of rail and marine transportation. Within the refinery, Phillips 66 Partners has a rail receiving facility with 75,000 BPD of offloading capacity. The refinery produces a high percentage of transportation fuels, as well as petrochemical feedstocks, residual fuel oil and home heating oil. Refined products are distributed to East Coast customers by pipeline, barge, rail car and truck.
