Description

Instrument Technicians work in the maintenance department of the refinery. The positions are straight day jobs, subject to occasional shift work, turnarounds, call outs and mandatory overtime. Instrument Technicians are responsible for the installation, preventive maintenance, callibration, repair, and troubleshooting of refinery process control instrumentation. This work takes place in all areas of the refinery, outside exposed to the weather elements and to blowing air, heat, noise and vibration. The refinery processes involve hazardous and volatile materials under high temperatures and pressures. The work may take place at heights on vessels and towers and/or in confined spaces.

Responsibilities may include :

  • Installing, removing, calibrating and repairing of refinery electronic digital and analog and pneumatic process control insturments
  • Installing and maintaining on-line analyzers
  • Tuning Instrument control loops
  • Testing and maintaining Instrument Safety Systems
  • Troubleshooting, maintaining and overhauling process control valves
  • Fabricating small diameter instrument tubing
  • Testing and troubleshooting programmable logic controllers
  • Preparing schematic drawings, sketches and reports to reflect activities
  • Coordinating work of others as needed
  • Assuring compliance with all company policies and procedures and training requirements

Qualifications

Basic/Required :

  • Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must be able to be Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) qualified
  • Maintain a valid driver's license
  • 3 or more years of experience as a journeyman level Instrument Craftsman in an oil refinery, chemical process, electric utility, electrical distribution equipment testing or similar facility
  • Willing and able, with or without reasonable accommodation, to:
  • Lift a minimum of 50 pounds

  • Climb up to 285 feet in height

  • Work near large, hot, high-speed machines

  • Work in enclosed spaces, such as tanks and silos

  • Work overtime

  • Work with petroleum products that are under high pressure and heat

  • Work outside in harsh weather conditions

  • Maintain your face daily so that a respirator/face mask can seal properly (some examples include being free of facial hair and/or clean shaven)

  • Wear fire retardant clothing and personal protective equipment (such as steel-toe shoes, ear and eye protection)

  • Work around chemicals, including acids and bases, that may be under high pressure

Preferred :

  • Completion of an industrial instrument craft apprenticeship
  • Good oral and written communication skills pertaining to documenting inspection and repair information (English Language)
  • Ability to read at a level to understand written safety procedures, work procedures, work permits and instruction manuals (English Language)
  • Proficiency in computer usuage basics including e-mail, Windows navigation, SAP

Construction of the Lake Charles Refinery was completed in 1941 at a cost of $4.5MM. The refinery was originally designed to process 7,500 barrels of crude oil per day to supply high-octane aviation fuel to WWII war planes.

Through 75 years of upgrades, LCR now processes 244,000 barrels of crude oil per day. Each upgrade of the facility brought additional complexity and market advantages. Most recently, LCR completed a $300MM dollar project to meet clean fuels regulations.
