The Advanced Process Control (APC) Team Lead is responsible for the team providing APC, modeling, and on-line optimization at the refinery. Reporting to the Process Control Lead, the APC Team Lead provides direction for the refinery’s APC program, identifying optimization opportunities, creating best practices, and setting team priorities. The APC Team Lead is a cross-functional leader, working with other groups in the refinery as well as within the company to accomplish team goals. As a working lead, in addition to leading the APC team, responsibilities include ownership and maintenance of several APC applications.
Responsibilities May Include:
Provide, through the team, APC engineering support to improve refinery process unit operational performance through APC application performance monitoring, tuning, and optimization.
Responsible for the identification, development, implementation, design, and modeling of new, as well as maintenance of existing APC applications (Honeywell Forge APC). Includes implementation of new releases and upgrades.
Responsible for identification of new income improvement opportunities through APC applications for the purpose of improving operational stability and profitability.
Responsible for mentorship and development of less experienced APC engineers
Responsible for team performance reviews, providing regular individual feedback, and personnel development
Responsible for developing APC safe work practices, application documentation, training, maintenance procedures, testing procedures, specifications and engineering standards where required.
Responsible for applicable APC Key Performance Indicators (KPI), communication of the results along with any remediations required to maintain or improve APC performance.
Provide APC expertise to small and large capital projects by defining instrumentation and control strategy requirements related to APC and secure project funding where required.
Responsible for modeling support for refinery gasoline blending (FTNIR chemometric models).
Responsible for creating, adopting, and sharing APC best practices through internal and external networking.
Oversee Management of Change (MOC) related to APC applications.
Responsible for ensuring regular audits of APC applications to ensure they adhere to safety and reliability related safeguards (alarms).
Stay abreast of the latest APC technology through attendance at internal/external technical seminars, conferences, and training.
Partner with other refinery teams to provide insight on how APC applications can be used to optimize the process unit and how best to achieve process goals via APC.
Responsible for engaging the refinery Planning team to discuss possible refinery margin improvement opportunities and large-scale multi-unit optimization opportunities.
Responsible for setting direction for multi-unit and larger scale optimizer implementation, including deep learning applications.
Responsible for ensuring advanced applications are supportable within the context of the refinery DCS network.
Basic/Required Qualifications:
Legally authorized to work in the job posting country
Valid driver's license
Bachelor of Science degree in Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical Engineering
Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills
Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
Possess a strong desire to learn, enhance skills, and keep up with APC technology, industry standards and codes
Ability to work collaboratively within a team environment including collaborating with other departments
Experience with one or more refinery process (e.g. crude/vacuum distillation, reforming, hydrotreating, alkylation, fluid catalytic cracking, hydrocracking, sulfur plant, etc.)
Knowledge/experience with process control techniques, including basic and advanced control design
Experience with the Honeywell Distributed Control System (DCS) Experion platform
5 or more years of advanced process control experience (implementation/maintenance) in refining, petrochemical, manufacturing, chemical, paper or a related industry.
Preferred Qualifications:
Prior experience as a supervisor, preferably in a Process Control or Advanced Process Control capacity
Advanced degree with a focus on process control and optimization
APC implementation and/or maintenance experience using Honeywell’s Forge APC
Experience in process design and modeling, especially dynamic modeling
Experience with deep learning software, techniques, and optimization tools
The Wood River Refinery is located in Roxana, Illinois, about 15 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri, at the confluence of the Mississippi and Missouri rivers. Refinery facilities include crude distilling, naphtha reforming, fluid catalytic cracking, alkylation, hydrocracking, hydrodesulfurization and delayed coking units. The refinery processes a mixture of light, low-sulfur; heavy, high sulfur; and high-acid crude oil. The crude supply is sourced domestically or from Canada. Wood River produces a high percentage of transportation fuels. Other products include petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt and petroleum coke. Refined products are distributed to customers by pipeline, rail car, barge and truck and are shipped to markets throughout the Midcontinent region.
